Short Sharp Shock Evaluation

My idea for a 20 second video was first of all getting ready to go out which I then changed to getting children ready to go to school. I felt the idea of getting children ready to go to school would be easier to show in a 20 second video as the audience would be given a stronger idea of who the person is and where they are going. I then created brainstorms and started to storyboard what I would need to film to show a child getting ready. My storyboards worked well as they clearly showed each part I would need to film, what was happening, how long the clip will last and camera angle.

When researching for my 20 second video I made sure to include research in to other videos that are edited to a fast pace, as this gave me a better view of how fast clips with lots of edits worked. I analysed car chase clips that used lots of different camera angles to give the effect of a fast and panicked car chase. I then also looked at videos relating to my chosen subject of getting ready to go out as these showed all the different things people do when getting ready and would give me inspiration for camera angles I could use. one of  the other videos I looked at was a Lurpack advert which included a sound track made up of separate sounds like I used in my video.

Some of the feedback I got from presenting my video was about how I used good camera angles when filming, for example the point of view when passing the plate of toast and helping put a school jumper on. I also got feedback in how I could improve, like using colour correction on my clips to brighten them up which I also agree would improve my clips and by adding a clip at the end to show leaving the house for school as this would make it clearer that they have left the house.

I liked my over all video as it shows everything that happens in the morning when getting ready for school and for most of the video you can clearly see what is happening. I also liked editing my video and adding in sounds, this worked better than I thought as although I had less time than I originally planned to edit my video I found it was easier to fit 30 edits in to 20 seconds than I had previously thought. Having used final cut pro before I found it easy to edit my clips and as they were simple cuts I didn't need to include any effects. I mostly used the razor blade tool and in and out keyframes. There were a few times I had trouble when editing as the layout in final cut pro x had changed slightly form other versions of the final cut pro software I had used. Filming my video was one of the things I lest liked about this project because it was difficult trying to get the lighting right for some clips and keeping the camera still without a tripod when filming was also another thing that made it more difficult.

The main problem I had with this project was having access to the software when editing because I had missed lessons and started editing my video in one version of final cut pro in class and then continued editing my video at home on another version. this made opening project files I had worked on difficult and I found it easier to just import the clips and start editing again. I then found when exporting my final video there was a problem with the software and this meant it took time having to re install final cut pro x so I could then export my final film.

My time management for this project didn't work as well as it could have. At the beginning, when the project was set I missed 2 days so this delayed me from getting the new brief and learning what I would have to do. This project was only set to last 5 weeks and so by missing 2 days of lessons and then not getting the brief until after a 4 day weekend made me a week behind in starting the project. This also worked the same as I was ill at the end off the project meaning I missed lessons where we could edit the footage and where we had access to sounds from sound track pro and therefore limiting the time I had left to edit my film and add sounds.

If I did this project again I would take more consideration over planning my idea with storyboards as I found with my final video that it seemed to end with out being clear that they had left for school. I would also make sure that I had more time to edit my video as I had planed to use a week for editing and then as I was ill I had less time to edit my video and some of the sound clips I could only access when in lesson and not at home. another thing I would do if I was to do this project again is to make sure I filmed enough that I could add in other shots or change a shot if it didn't work when i was editing. By having more time to edit my film and having more footage to edit I would be able to make sure I can create the panic when something goes wrong or with the general rush of getting ready in the morning.

The changes I made to my final video were adding an intro as this was not one of the things mentioned in my feedback but I noticed that lots of people had added an intro to the start of their film. I added a simple intro that said "monday morning, short sharp shock" this is enough to tell the audience what the video os about. Another change I made was to add in a clip where you see the front door close as if the child has left for school. I added this hoping it would help make the end of my film make more sense as it is now clearer they have left before the parent made a cup of tea. If I had more time to re edit my video after presenting it for feedback I would have colour corrected the clips that looked dark, but as this would take longer to change and I haven't properly used colour correction tool I found after attempting to adjust the colour I was not improving my clips.  Another thing if I had more time would be to play with the length of the clips as towards the end of the video having shorter clips would make the video seem more panicked and then after the door closes using longer clips it would show how things are more relaxed.

My Final Video

This is my final edited video that i will present to the class for feedback . . .

Digital Story boards

These ate my digital story boards. They help to show each clip I will use in my video. I have included information about what is happening in each clip, an image, what type of shot it is, how long each clip will be and the angle i will film at.

Pitch Presentation

This is my pitch presentation . . .

Lurpak

This video is of a Lurpak advert i found. In this advert they have used lots of closeups of people chopping and cooking food, each clip is short and the advert has someone singing in the background about chopping, slicing, mashing and other things they are doing to prepare a meal. This advert works well as the clips are really short and allow just enough time for the audience to see what is happening giving a fast pace to the overall advert. They have used sounds over the top of the advert to exaggerate what they are doing for example a chopping sound when they are cutting vegetables.
The over exaggerated sounds used in this advert are similar to how i am planning to use sound in my video. i feel by using simple sounds over the top of the fast video will help create a fun 20 second film that is also easy for the audience to understand.

Cheeper by the Dozen

This is a clip i found that gave me inspiration for my 20 second video, it is taken from the film cheeper by the dozen and shows the family sitting down to breakfast. The video shows as they sit down to eat and 1 of the children sees a frog sat on the light. there is then a mad panic as the family try to catch the frog and food, plates, cups and lots of other stuff go flying from the table.
I found this video was good inspiration as it has lots of quick edits that use lots of different camera angles and different shots. It is also good inspiration as it shows how getting children ready in the morning can turn to panic if something goes wrong.
I am going to try and include lots of different angles and shots in my video for example rather than just showing someone eating breakfast I might show toast on a plate, someone picking it up and then a close up of them taking a bite.
I could also use the idea of something going wrong as part of my video which would add to the fast pace and panic of getting a child ready for school.

How My Idea Changed

I have changed my idea from getting ready to go out to getting children ready for school. I changed my idea to be a morning before school as this would help my video be more clear, giving the audience an idea of who is getting ready and also why they are getting ready/ where they are going.
The video is going to use a parents point of view along with closeups and also other shots. By using POV in my video it will help the audience see that they are getting the child ready for school rather than just a child getting ready by them self.
This will also give me more things to film for example making a packed lunch or packing a school bag  may not be done when someone else gets ready

This idea still works well with the time i have for this project as i am filming at home. This makes it easier to film as i do not have to get permission to film in a location and also won't have to wait for suitable weather.

A Day Made With Glass

This video i found shows a day where they are constantly using technology. The video is used to show an idea of how it would work if smart glass was made and used in every day life. This works well as it shows someone getting up in the morning, getting ready, making a meal, going to work, making a phone call and picking out clothes. These are all seen as every day events and so smart glass is to be used all day every day.
This was inspiration for my video as they show someone getting up and getting ready which i am planning to show but using a bit more detail.
The first few shots in this video are panning shots. The first is panning up the bed, the second over the covers and then they pan closer to the TV which shows the time and then have a shot that is closer to the TV. This style of jumping in and out of close shots is what i will try to create when i edit my final video as i feel this allows to show what is going on and also close up detail of something.

My Chosen Idea

My chosen idea is getting ready to go out. I chose this idea as i feel it is something that would be long enough for me to use 30 shots but still short enough that the audience would be able to understand what is going on in only 20 seconds, for example making a cup of tea would include less and so a lot of the shots would be very similar where as if i used the idea of a day at work there would be lots of things that i couldn't show in a 20 second video.
I am planning to show from the moment someone wakes up in the morning till the moment they leave the house to go out as this will give me enough to film and create 30 different edits.
I feel another benefit with my idea is that different things during a morning take different lengths of time like brushing teeth would take less time than getting dressed or eating breakfast. By including things that take different lengths of time this allows me to use more shots for some things and to play with close up shots and shots that are further away

Car Chase

I found that a lot of films used quick edits to show the fast pace journey of a care chase. By using fast edits it creates opportunity to show different views of the car and use different camera angles that add to the effect of a wild car chase.

This first clip is taken from The fast and furious and shows a fast car chase between the 1 character in the car and the others who are on motorbikes. At the start of the clip it shows just before the car chase starts and the main character gets in his car. There are 71 fast shots used in this car chase scene from when he gets in the car to the clip where you see one of the guys falling off his bike and rolling across the floor. This scene only takes 2 minutes to show a car chase but is extremely effective to show the speed they are going and all the detail needed to inform the audience that they are also shooting each other as the chase continues.

The second video i found shows the top 10 car chase scenes. which shows how although they are mostly all fast pace scens they include lots of detail about the chase that makes them all very different, for example:
The location and setting of the car chase to help it fit in with the movie it is from and help inform the audience of where they are or racing to.
The characters as they are the people from the story line of the film.
The vehicles used for example cars, bikes and trucks.
The time of shots they use as long shots work well for showing something like a car flying across a bridge but are less useful showing a car speeding round a corner.
The angle they use as a close up would show details like the panic of the driver or a close up of how fast a wheel is going and long shots that would show where the car is going or who they are following
Car chase scenes work well to show how effective it can be to use lots of fast pace edits in 1 short scene or clip, although not all car chase scenes are fast pace and use quick edits.

Going to College

I have decided not to create a mood board on the idea of a journey going to college because on reflection it would be hard to create a 20 second video of a journey to college in the time that is set for this project. I also feel that because it is a simple journey of walking to the station getting on the train then walking from lewes train station to college that there would not be enough detail in the journey that would fill 30 different shots and still create an interesting video. Another problem i found is that most of my video would have to be filmed in in public meaning that i have to rely on good weather  and to film things like at the train station and on the train i would need to get permission to film and this would also be time consuming.

As this is a short project i feel to expand the time i have for filming i should choose an idea that can be filmed mostly indoors and that i would not need to get permission for filming in a public location. I have decided to choose between getting ready to go out and making a cake as they would both be able to be filmed at home.

Getting Ready To Go Out Mood Board

This is the second mood board i made, it shows some of the images i found for inspiration when i was researching the idea of getting ready to go out . . .

M first ideas

The first 3 ideas that i really liked were. . .

Getting ready to go out

My first idea was a video of someone getting ready to go out. I could film when they wake up in the morning as the alarm goes off and as they get dressed and eat breakfast up until they leave the house. This would allow to show the different things they do in a morning. I could also play with the idea of them getting up early, on time or late which would change the way in which they would get ready and the speed of how they do things.

Making a cake

My second idea was making a cake. This could include everything from bringing the ingredients home measuring them out, mixing the ingredients, the finished cooked cake and decorated cake.

Going to college

My third idea was the journey to college. This could start with getting up in the morning as the alarm goes off and end as i get to college. I could also start the film as i leave the house, after getting ready and just show the journey from my house to the college, as i walk to the station catch the train get off the train and then the walk to the college/ classroom.

The Short Sharp Shock Brief

The Short Sharp Shock brief is to create a short film between 15-20 second and contains at least 30 edits. The film should be a dynamic film sequence that shows a journey or event. The film should be action packed and dynamic and also still clearly show the chosen subject. The chosen subject should be an every day event like finding keys or cooking a meal. It should include signal sound clips and not a continuous sound track. It should be a film using self created video but may include up to 3 still images. It may include 3 second title and end screen but this will be in addition to the 20 second film
